The Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, continues to demonstrate that professional policing is not achieved simply through political speeches or statements, but through responsive, determined and principled leadership.
On July 25, 2026, RULAAC filed a petition with the Inspector General regarding the arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, and apparent abuse of police powers against Eng. Leonard Uzoma and Mr Ndubuisi Uchehara by officers of the Force Intelligence Department.
The petition raised serious concerns about the apparent abuse of police powers to victimize a complainant in an ongoing police investigation and fundamental rights action.
Having recognized the urgency of the issue, also in light of the news regarding Eng. Considering Uzoma’s deteriorating health, we requested the Inspector General’s intervention.
We are pleased that the Inspector General responded promptly. We were informed that he had ordered the immediate release of the two men and his order was communicated to the family by his principal staff officer.
This timely intervention strengthens public confidence that under the leadership of IGP Tunji Disu, complaints of abuse of police powers will receive attention and that officers acting outside the law cannot be presumed to have institutional cover.
We congratulate the Inspector General for demonstrating, through action, his commitment to professionalism, respect for the rule of law, due process and the protection of human rights. Leadership is measured not only by established standards, but by the willingness to apply them consistently and decisively.
While this action is commendable, we are confident that the Inspector General will also ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention of the victims, hold all offending officers accountable, and protect the integrity of ongoing investigations.
This is the type of leadership that strengthens the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force and inspires public trust.
