Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has urged Nigerians to assume their collective responsibility in building a peaceful, united and prosperous nation as the country commemorates its 66th anniversary of independence.
Aiyedatiwa made the call on Thursday during Independence Day celebrations in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, where he reflected on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence and the responsibilities facing the current generation.
The governor said the country’s progress cannot be achieved by the government alone, and stressed the importance of active citizenship and shared commitment to nation-building.
He said, “We are grateful for the peace we continue to enjoy, for the strength to face the challenges that exist, and for the privilege of witnessing another year in the life of our great country.
“Today, commemorating 66 years of independence, we reflect on the journey we have taken, the responsibilities that lie before us, and the future we must build together.
“Around this period, 66 years ago, a generation of Nigerians dared to believe that people of different languages, traditions and creeds could share a common destiny. They handed us not a finished nation, but the responsibility to build, preserve and improve the nation whose freedom they had won through courage, sacrifice and faith.

“Independence, therefore, is more than the memory of a date; it is a continuing responsibility towards the past, present and future. It challenges each generation to ask: What have you done with the inheritance entrusted to you?”
Aiyedatiwa called on citizens to renew their commitment to the values necessary to move the country forward, particularly peace, unity, patriotism and responsible citizenship.
He added, “As we celebrate this anniversary of Independence, let us renew our confidence in Nigeria and our commitment to nation-building efforts.
“Let us continue to champion peace, unity, patriotism and responsible citizenship, knowing that the Nigeria we want will not be built by government alone, but by the collective efforts of its citizens.”
The Ondo Governor also acknowledged the efforts of the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu in implementing economic reforms and development initiatives.
Aiyedatiwa said Ondo State appreciated the measures aimed at strengthening the economy, improving infrastructure and creating a more favorable environment for investment.
He also highlighted federal projects and initiatives that could have direct economic implications for Ondo State, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the proposed Deep Sea Port.
“We recognize his efforts in strengthening the economy, infrastructure and investment environment, as well as his attention to strategic development opportunities that have positive implications for Ondo State.
“We greatly appreciate the cooperation around initiatives such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the proposed Deep Sea Port and other projects capable of expanding our state’s economic prospects.
“We look forward to deeper collaboration for the benefit of our people and the continued development of Nigeria,” the governor said.
The Governor’s message on Independence Day centered on the need for Nigerians to look beyond mere celebrations of their country’s independence and recommit to the responsibility of building and preserving the country for future generations.
