Talented singer-songwriter Eri Ife, popularly known as “Esquire Wey Dey Run Choir”, returns
with “Rubicon”. After the release of “Torun Tori” and “Aroma” earlier this year, which
has grown his catalog to over 1 million streams, the Nigerian singer-songwriter presents a
Five-track EP that brings together Afrobeats, Afro-Gospel, Soul and Worship into one statement of
wedding ring. Driven by African percussion, horns, warm melodies and direct writing,
“Rubicon” offers Eri Ife’s clearest and most committed work to date.
The project is built around one fundamental idea: unwavering devotion to God. It takes His
name and its meaning from the historical expression “crossing the Rubicon”, a decisive act
from which there is no turning back. In “Rubicon,” Eri Ife treats that idea as a
declaration of total abandonment to Christ. Each record contributes to a central file
narrative that frames devotion not as a single moment but as a lifelong commitment.
J3thro, Ife MOJ and BiodunTheSage shape the project’s sound through the contemporary
Afrobeat production, Yoruba musical influences and live performances. The result is a
body of work centered on faith and rooted in African musical expression while remaining
accessible to listeners from different regions.
Rubicon is spread over 5 tracks:
Aroma – The project opens with ‘Aroma’, a heartfelt expression of constructed devotion
around rich live instrumentation, additional horns and talking drums. ‘Aroma’
affirms God’s faithfulness in every season of life.
● Rubicon – The title track establishes the EP’s central surrender statement seen in
the refrain declaring obedience over fear, “Ko s’ikoyin (there is no turning back).” It
it is a deliberate choice to follow God without retreating.
● Torun Tori – A reflection on divine love that surpasses human understanding,
capturing the wonder of experiencing a love too deep to fully explain. His inspiration is
from answered academic prayers and reflection on the ways God meets people
the point of their need
● KSMD (Kin Sha Ma Dupe) – This song addresses survival, growth and grace,
transform gratitude into testimony. It shines through the Yoruba expression of
thanks. It features live drums and horns that bring the rhythm of the project
and melodic core
● Ebenezer – Ebenezer has its roots in the scriptural idea of remembrance and
gratitude for God’s help. Transform anxiety into testimony, drawing on the biblical
‘stone of help’ as a reminder of the presence of God. A necessary note to conclude a built project
on faith.
Speaking on the EP, Eri Ife says: “Rubicon is about my personal journey through different
stages of my life and my surrender to walk with God through it all. From a song born
from answered academic prayers to resolving my overthinking, each song reflects a
different part of that commitment, but the message remains the same. There isn’t
looking back. “Rubicon” is a testimony of God meeting me in every moment of life, and I hope so
the project helps my listeners do the same.
More than a collection of faith-inspired songs, “Rubicon” positions Eri Ife as a voice
bringing spiritual conviction to contemporary Afrobeats. The project connects Africa
live beats and instrumentation with songwriting focused on worship, surrender and
identity. “Rubicon” embraces Afro-evangelical, Christian, worship, inspirational and African
Spaces of contemporary music.
