The Senate on Tuesday declared that the rainbow coalition entered into the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is on track and will lead to victory for all-encompassing governance at the federal level in 2027.
The remarks on the rainbow coalition in the Senate by its leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and the President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, came after the early adjournment of proceedings by the Red Chamber to pave the way for the participation in the inauguration of the electoral council at the Presidential Villa by senators who are members of it.
Specifically, the Senate leader, when called upon to make an adjournment motion at around 12:50 pm before the inauguration scheduled for 2:00 pm, asked for the senators’ indulgence to make some remarks on something historic.
The historic thing according to him, was the APC Presidential Campaign Council, which is a rainbow coalition with members of the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo of APGA as Coordinator, the Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke of Accord as Coordinator, the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike of PDP as Coordinator for FCT and Rivers State and Senator Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe North) as Coordinator.
“My point, Mr President, is that in this country, in the best interest of the Nigerian people, a rainbow coalition is very much on the move and very much on track.
“I think this is something that should not go unnoticed. We will leave this chamber as members of the ruling party, accompanied by our colleagues, to go to the presidential campaign council.
“We look forward to a campaign that will truly celebrate ideas and celebrate our democracy. I truly congratulate you, Mr. President,” he said.
Seemingly elated by Bamidele’s remarks, Akpabio in his response said the rainbow coalition’s presidential campaign advice was indeed historic and uncommon, the victory of which he said is known to senators like Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central).
He said: “I would also like to note, as you said, that this is historic and not common. It has never happened in the history of our democracy since 1999, that a sitting president constitutes his presidential campaign council with almost all parties in Nigeria included.
“So, this is not just an inclusive government in terms of infrastructure, it is not just an inclusive government in terms of revenue allocation and allocations, it is not just an inclusive government in terms of big strikes in reforms, it is also an inclusive government in terms of unity, unity of purpose in democracy.
“The coalition is clear that President Tinubu’s second term will be a unity government, just as his electoral council is a unity electoral council made up of almost all political parties in the country.
“This is how Nigeria should be. I am not going to predict the outcome of the election, but I know that Senator Abdul Ningi also knows the outcome of the election.”
