UNILAG Sports Secretary, Adebayo Okikiola, reflects on his impactful tenure and charges his successor to build on the progress

The outgoing Sports Secretary of the Lagos University Students Union (ULSU), Adebayo Okikiola, has reflected on his tenure, highlighting historic achievements and expressing confidence in the incoming Sports Secretary to maintain the momentum of sports development within the institution.

Despite describing his tenure as brief, Okikiola said it was driven by determined leadership and a commitment to promoting sports throughout the University of Lagos community.

Among the major milestones recorded during his administration were the introduction and successful execution of the Interfaculty Athletics Games and the ULSU Super Cup.

According to him, both competitions significantly boosted student participation, strengthened relationships between professors, and promoted healthy competition throughout the university.

Okikiola also noted a unique connection between him and his successor, Ajeigbe Emmanuel, revealing that they both went from serving as faculty sports secretaries before taking on leadership roles at the ULSU level.

He said the shared experience provides a solid foundation for effective sports administration and reflects a deep understanding of the responsibilities inherent in the office.

The outgoing Secretary of Sports also recalled having worked closely with the incoming official during the organization of Artlympics 6.0: “The Scepter of Seven”, a major sports competition between the Faculties of Arts and Creative Arts. The event remains one of the most important Dean’s Cup tournaments at the University of Lagos and marked a turning point in their collaborative efforts.

Offering advice to his successor, Okikiola urged the new Secretary of Sports to lead with vision, innovation and dedication, while prioritizing inclusivity, athlete well-being and stronger collaboration with the college’s sports representatives.

He expressed confidence that the incoming administration will have the opportunity to further strengthen sports as a unifying force that promotes excellence, leadership and student participation across the University of Lagos.

“I wish you a successful and satisfying tenure,” Okikiola said as he formally handed over the reins of the ULSU Sports Secretariat.
