NPC confirms the death of President Aminu Yusuf

The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Executive Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf, at the age of 66.

A statement signed by the Director of the Commission’s Public Relations Department, Mrs Adelayo Serifat Olurode, and made available to journalists on Friday, revealed that Yusuf died in Abuja after a short illness.

According to the statement, Yusuf, who was sworn in as the eighth substantive chairman of the commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025, had provided visionary leadership and championed a seven-point agenda aimed at repositioning the commission.

The commission described his death as a significant loss to the nation, noting that he was “a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator and a compassionate leader” whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering.

Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, and had a distinguished track record in public service spanning education, governance, grassroots politics and community development.

Prior to his appointment as NPC Chairman, he served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area (LGA) and was an elected member of the Niger State House of Assembly.

Among other positions, he also served as a board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and as a Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.

Until his appointment as NPC Chairman, Yusuf served as National Chairman of the Alumni Association of Niger State College of Education, Minna, and Co-Chairman of Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skills Acquisition and Development Committee.

The NPC said its leadership has been characterized by a strong commitment to strengthening the commission and ensuring that reliable demographic data remains central to national development planning.

“The Commission has lost a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering,” the statement read.

The commission expressed its condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger State, as well as the Yusuf family, friends and associates.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive Yusuf’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Yusuf’s death comes at a time when accurate population and demographic data remains critical for government planning and policymaking in areas such as health, education, employment, social protection and resource allocation.

The NPC is responsible for generating and coordinating the demographic information needed to support evidence-based planning and development across the country.

The federal commissioners, director general, management and staff of the commission mourned the late president and prayed for the repose of his soul.
