Oyo to enforce house-to-house waste collection policy – ​​Commissioner

The Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, on Thursday said the state government has started implementing the house-to-house waste collection policy across the state.

Honorable Aderinto, who dropped this hint while speaking outside the monitoring exercise, said environmental officials from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will have to undertake inspections of residential buildings, commercial premises and other facilities to ensure compliance with regulations on proper waste management.

The commissioner said the measure is in line with state laws requiring residents, businesses and other facilities to take appropriate steps to dispose of their waste.

Aderinto said enforcement was necessary to address the environmental, aesthetic, economic and public health challenges associated with improper waste management within and across the state.

It added that the exercise involves inspecting premises to ascertain whether occupiers have adequate waste containers and are registered with approved and designated waste consultants assigned to their premises and that buildings found without the required waste containers or appropriate waste collection arrangements have been served with abatement notices and given a 48-hour grace period to comply.

Stating that failure to comply with the rules within the stipulated 48 hours would result in enforcement action, including closure of non-compliant premises, the Hon. Aderinto said the government would continue the exercise across the state until the required level of compliance was achieved.

While urging residents to cooperate with government by procuring adequate waste containers and engaging only approved waste consultants designated in their areas, he advised them to report any accredited waste collector who fails to evacuate waste as required to the ministry or the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA).
