The talented Nigerian musician Obedo PF releases a new solo album entitled “Ronaldo”.

The title says it all before you even play. He is comparing himself to the football legend, trying to emulate him in his consistency and desire. It’s the flexibility that a lot of street pop kids are looking for these days. Obedo PF bears it harder than the others.

The beat also hits differently than “Lagos.” They built it around a powerful 808 pattern with sparse melancholic synths underneath. A faint choral chant repeats in the back, giving it that hymn feel. There is nothing congested in the mix and the vocals are given space to breathe.

This one sounds sharper. His delivery is almost stopped. Short bars. No wasted space. A little sharper in his tone. This is a change from the smoother ride he undertook on ‘Lagos’. But the violence is consistent with the topic.

Here he’s not just pounding his chest on the lyrical side. He throws out real challenges in bars as well as football chatter, so the metaphor never feels cheesy. It’s more of a personal motivation than empty boasting and that’s the part that hits home.

Obedo PF is definitely broadening his horizons with two records to his name. “Ronaldo” is the grit, “Lagos” is the swagger, and both work because he seems comfortable in both lanes.
