Red Cross reaches 142,915 Jigawa residents with flood disaster warnings

The Nigerian Red Cross (NRCS) has broadcast flood early warning messages under the Shock-Responsive Social Protection (SRSP) project to 142,915 residents of Jigawa.

This was made known on the penultimate Thursday during a training day organized by the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) held in Dutse Royal, the capital of Jigawa State.

Speaking at one of the sessions, Project Manager, NRCS, Kefas Shutty, said the training was organized for civil society organizations and media practitioners.

“The awareness raising was carried out by 75 trained community volunteers in Auyo, Hadejia and Miga local government areas.

“The beneficiaries are 61,805 males, 68,558 females, 2,174 people with disabilities and 10,378 children.

“The project is funded by the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Education Fund (UNICEF). It started in November 2024 and was supposed to end in April 2026, but was extended by three months before closing,” he said.

Shutty cited challenges, including the absence of triggers for social protection support, gaps in funding, coordination and logistics.

He noted that, according to UNICEF criteria, at least 2,000 affected families are needed before social protection support can be activated.

The event also saw the unveiling of Community Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) for Auyo, Hadejia and Miga.

Those who spoke on various topics during the sessions included Dr Benson Agbro, Director of Disaster Management, NRCS, and Dr Muhd ​​Bala-Sunusi, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), as well as Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMC).

Others were respectively Mr. Hannafi Yakubu, representing Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JISEMA), Mr. Timothy Ali-Yohanna, Coordinator, Disaster Management, NRCS, Mr. Balarabe Sani, for Media Professionals, and Ms. Safiya Abdullahi, for Jigawa Civil Societies Network.
