The NFF named Eguavoen as head coach of the Super Falcons

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as the Super Falcons’ interim head coach for the 2028 Olympic qualifiers against Comoros in October.

This comes after the firing of Justin Madugu and his technical crew last month.

The NFF made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, saying the move was only temporary as the search for a substantive coach for the women’s senior national team continued.

“Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen will lead the Nigerian Senior Women’s National Team, Super Falcons, on an interim basis for the 2028 Olympic qualifying match against Comoros in October, as the search for a substantive head coach for the team continues,” the statement read.

Madugu and her technical crew were ordered to step down on August 17, days after Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations and subsequent failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons, who entered WAFCON as defending champions, suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the World Cup qualifying play-off.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s record of appearing in every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

Eguavoen will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma, while former Super Eagles goalkeeping coach Olatunji Baruwa will act as goalkeeping coach.

Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf was also appointed as one of the assistant coaches.

The Super Falcons will face Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on October 9 and 13, with both legs scheduled to take place in Nigeria.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition, while Comoros progressed after beating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

The Super Falcons must go through four rounds of two-legged knockouts to secure one of Africa’s two available spots at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

If Nigeria beats Comoros, they will face the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027.

The fourth round will be held from 4 to 12 October 2027, while the final round will take place from 23 November to 4 December 2027.
