The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned what it described as “unwarranted attacks and accusations” against Bauchi State gubernatorial candidate, Senator Shehu Buba.
The party in a statement on Friday evening by Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, its National Publicity Secretary stated that it was “resisting the temptation to comment on the increasing and damaging comments linking our governorship candidate with activities linked to bandits and kidnappers”.
He added that the party “has resisted the temptation to get involved in issues with those making these mischievous accusations for fear that doing so would only provide oxygen to the mischief”.
Ishaq noted that “It is also important to prove the veracity of these allegations against a member of our party who, to the best of our knowledge, deserves our trust and confidence that he will represent the PRP with the highest level of integrity and responsibility.
“The PRP now believes that there is a campaign to undermine our candidate with unbridled lies and mischief. We now believe that these allegations are the work of people who are threatened by the popularity of our candidate and his prospects of being elected as the next Governor of Bauchi State. These lies must stop. Those who have evidence of criminal activity against him must provide such evidence to the authorities who must treat them in accordance with the law.”

Citing legal provisions against such accusations, a PRP spokesperson said, “The Election Law 2026 states in Article 127(c) states, “Every person who before or during the election publishes any statement concerning his person.”
the character or behavior of a candidate calculated to reduce the odds

without any reasonable basis for belief by the person publishing it

of ₦200,000 or imprisonment for a term of six months or both.”
He added, that “For the avoidance of doubt, the PRP has full confidence in its gubernatorial candidate, a sitting Senator and a private citizen who took action when necessary to try and end the scourge of criminality now ravaging the country. We believe his competitors and critics feel threatened by the spread and depth of his popularity, and are now forced to spread outrageous and slanderous lies against him.
“The party supports Senator Shehu Buba, its candidate for the governorship of Bauchi State. Those who feel threatened by his popularity should strive to level his approval rating and stop the smear campaign against him”.
The party’s statement was a reaction to recent developments after Buba denied new allegations linking him to bandits, and described viral videos and claims circulating on social media as part of what he called an ongoing campaign of disinformation and character assassination.
Buba, the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, has faced allegations of ties to suspected banditry since 2024. He has consistently denied the allegations.
The latest controversy follows the circulation of a video by a content creator named “D English Alhaji” accusing the alleged bandit kingpin of visiting the senator’s residence.
The allegations were further strengthened after a resident identified as Hassan accused Buba, in an interview with the social media influencer, of being among the politicians allegedly aiding bandits in the area.
