Manchester City secured a narrow but significant 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester derby, despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men at Old Trafford.
Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute as City retained maximum points after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for violent behaviour.
The result extended Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season and handed manager Enzo Maresca another important victory, while United were left frustrated after failing to exploit their numerical advantage for most of the second half.
Last Sunday, Brighton and Hove Albion produced the biggest result of the day, beating newly promoted Coventry City 5-0 in a dominant performance at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s lead in the 51st minute. Pascal Groß converted a penalty in the 70th minute, Lewis Dunk added a stunning long-range effort in the 83rd minute, while Yasin Ayari completed the rout in the third minute of added time.
Haaland solves the Manchester derby
The Manchester derby started cautiously on both sides, but the contest soon heated up as the two teams battled for control.
City suffered a major setback in the 23rd minute when Foden was shown a red card for violent conduct following an incident involving United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Reduced to 10 players, City had to regroup and adopt a more defensive approach, while United were presented with an important opportunity to take control of the game.
The hosts, however, were unable to turn their numerical advantage into goals.
City remained disciplined and continued to pose a threat on the counterattack, with Haaland eventually providing the breakthrough.
The Norwegian striker gave City the lead in the 60th minute, scoring the decisive goal after an action that initially resulted in an offside. VAR later confirmed that the goal should stand.
United responded by increasing the pressure and making attacking changes in search of an equaliser.
The hosts came close to scoring on several occasions, including shots that hit the woodwork, but City’s defense remained resolute.

United fail to exploit their numerical advantage
Manchester United will be disappointed with the result, especially after having had more than an hour to play against a City team reduced to 10 men.
The Red Devils picked up the pace after falling behind and attempted to stretch City’s defensive shape through a series of attacking moves.
However, they did not have the necessary strength to break through the visitors’ defense.
United also had the opportunity to equalise, but City’s goalkeeper and defenders faced danger every time the hosts made their presence known.

Brighton demolishes Coventry
Brighton’s 5-0 win over Coventry was even more emphatic.
The visitors dominated possession and created the clearest chances during the first half, although Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth made several important saves to keep the scores level.
Brighton finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Charalampos Kostoulas, who controlled an aerial ball before firing into the bottom corner for his first Premier League goal of the season.
Coventry went into half-time with a single goal deficit, but their hopes of recovering disappeared almost immediately after the restart.
Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s lead in the 51st minute, finishing calmly after breaking behind the Coventry defence.
The home side’s problems worsened in the 63rd minute when Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for violent behaviour, leaving Coventry with just 10 players.
Groß, Dunk complete Brighton’s rout
Brighton took full advantage of Coventry’s numerical disadvantage and continued to attack.
The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute after Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas inside the area.
Pascal Groß converted from the penalty spot in the 70th minute to make it 3-0.
The fourth goal was the highlight of the afternoon.
Lewis Dunk scored in the 83rd minute, sending a spectacular effort from around 35 yards into the top corner to leave Rushworth with little chance.
With Coventry already beaten, Brighton added a fifth in stoppage time.
Yasin Ayari scored in the 90+3 minute, shooting a long-range shot into the bottom corner after receiving an assist from Groß.
The emphatic result took Brighton higher up the Premier League table, while Coventry’s difficult return to the top flight continued.
Coventry suffer from a miserable start
The defeat prolonged Coventry’s difficult opening to the season.
Frank Lampard’s side lost their first four Premier League games without scoring a single goal, becoming only the second team in Premier League history to suffer such a fate after Crystal Palace in 2017/18.
Despite the heavy scoring, Coventry showed occasional signs of promise throughout the match and created opportunities before Brighton eventually took control.
However, the combination of Brighton’s attacking quality, Awoniyi’s sending off and Coventry’s penalty made recovery increasingly difficult.
Lampard now faces the challenge of lifting a team who have yet to register a point or score a league goal since returning to the top flight.
City and Brighton release statements
Sunday’s two results produced contrasting but significant statements.
Manchester City showed their resilience by defeating their local rivals despite playing much of the match with 10 men, while Brighton showed their attacking strength by demolishing Coventry with five goals.

With another meeting between Leeds United and Newcastle United still scheduled for Monday, the latest round of matches has already produced plenty of drama, goals and surprises as the Premier League season gathers momentum.
