Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered security agencies to arrest those responsible for the killing of his ally, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, amid a lingering parking enforcement dispute in the state.
Oyeyemi was reportedly killed in Ile-Ife on Sunday as tensions mounted over the leadership and control of commercial parking in the state.
The deceased is said to have been involved in a fight for control of the parks with the current leader of the commercial drivers, Nurudeen Alowonle.
Reacting to the incident, Adeleke ordered the police and other security agencies to ferret out the culprits and ensure they face the full weight of the law.
The governor also ordered the immediate closure of parking lots by the contending groups as part of measures to prevent further violence.
In a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the government would not allow the dispute to degenerate into a breakdown of law and order.
“Law and order must be maintained. There will be no sacred cows as all culprits will be booked,” the governor said.
Adeleke appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that his administration will take steps to restore peace in the affected parks and communities.
“We call on the population to remain calm. We will ensure that peace is restored in all affected parks and areas.
“Security agencies have been instructed to ensure sustainability of peace at all costs,” he added.
The governor also announced plans to review the management of parking lots and garages across Osun State, saying his administration will reintroduce the park management system.
“We are reintroducing the Park Management System. I will soon issue an executive order to give effect to the new management system to manage parks and garages across the state,” Adeleke said.
The development comes amid prolonged competition for control and administration of commercial transportation fleets in the state, with rival interests seeking to influence the sector.
Meanwhile, Imole Campaign Council spokesperson during the August 15 governorship election, Pelumi Olajengbesi, expressed sorrow over Oyeyemi’s death.
Olajengbesi, in a Facebook post on Sunday, described the killing as “deeply unfortunate and painful”, saying the loss of life should prompt a broader reflection on violence and the value placed on human life.
“The loss of life due to violence should concern us all,” he said.
He urged residents and political actors to reject violence and promote peaceful means to resolve disputes.
“All of us, as a society, have a responsibility to build a culture where violence is not celebrated, where human life is respected, and where strength is measured by character rather than strength,” Olajengbesi said.
He called for a collective effort to discourage violence and promote respect for human dignity.
Olajengbesi also expressed his condolences to the family, friends and others affected by the Oyeyemi incident, praying for peace in Osun State.
The governor’s directive is expected to place renewed focus on parking safety and administration across the state, particularly as authorities move to implement a new framework for their management.
