Apart from his death, how Olu Jacobs helped shape the Nollywood generation

The death of veteran actor Olu Jacobs has brought renewed attention to a career that extended beyond the characters he played on screen.

Rather than just remembering him as a famous Nollywood actor, his colleagues and admirers now reflect on his influence on Nigerian acting and the generations of performers that followed.

Jacobs built a career that spanned several stages of the entertainment world. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he worked in British theater and television before returning to Nigeria and becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the country’s film industry.

His commanding voice and practiced style on stage made him especially memorable in his roles depicting traditional rulers, fathers, chiefs and other authority figures. But his contribution was more than just acting. With his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs was involved in building institutions related to film production, distribution, and performing arts education.
