Nigerian goalkeeper Samuel Friday James is emerging as one of the country’s young football promises after his move from Mavlon FC to Finnish SJK Seinäjoki.
Born on April 5, 2006, the 1.95 meter goalkeeper got his start in football at Mavlon FC, where his height, reflexes and command of the area caught the attention of scouts.
His performances also helped raise his profile within the Nigerian youth football system.
James moved to Finland in early 2025 and joined the SJK setup. He initially played for SJK Akatemia, the club’s reserve team, competing in the Ykkösliiga.
The move gave him the opportunity to adapt to European football, including its tactical demands, training methods and faster match pace.
Rather than being immediately thrown into senior first-team football, James’ development followed a gradual path.
His time at SJK Akatemia provided him with regular competitive experience and allowed him to adapt to life and football in Finland.
During his time in the reserve team, he recorded several clean sheets and produced a series of impressive performances.
His progress eventually led to his inclusion in SJK’s senior set-up. Publicly available player profiles list James as contracted to SJK Seinäjoki until December 31, 2026, with the club having the option to extend the deal for a further two years.
The evolution of the goalkeeper in Finland has also attracted attention in Nigeria. In September 2026, he received his first senior invitation to the Super Eagles squad after being included by coach Éric Chelle for Nigeria’s October friendly against Russia.
The invitation marks a significant step in James’ career. It places him among the group of young goalkeepers being monitored as Nigeria look to strengthen their long-term options at the position.
Although still developing and yet to establish himself as a full international, James’ journey reflects the increasing route available to Nigerian players through European football.
His transition from Mavlon FC to SJK Akatemia and then to the senior team and Super Eagles was based on gradual exposure, competitive experience and constant development.
