The hallmark of every leader is results-based management through the use of resources, people and programs with measurable results.
This is similar to Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club’s long-time general manager, Ifie Ozaka, who has successfully built a culture of excellence, collaboration and accountability at the club.
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Rivers Hoopers (nicknamed “The KingsMen”), strengthened their pedigree as one of the most successful basketball franchises in Nigerian sporting history to claim the Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) for the seventh time.
They secured the national championship with one game to spare at the 2026 NPBL Final Four, draining 12 3-pointers to dismantle the Gboko City Chiefs 88-76 on the second day of the playoffs.

At the same time, a statement issued at the end of the conference of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State Chapter, held on July 7, 2026, called for a complete overhaul of the management teams of all state-owned sports clubs. Referring to the Rivers Hoopers, in point 2c of the statement, they noted that the team is “also experiencing decline caused by poor management.”
While it becomes imperative for anyone in a leadership position to be subjected to scrutiny and criticism from individuals, entities, organizations, etc., it is up to critics to criticize constructively.
In the context of sport administrators, specific, objective, and actionable constructive criticism aimed at improving performance, decision making, or behavior can increase public trust and confidence.
Unfortunately, the aforementioned characteristics of constructive criticism and, more importantly, the press’s primary duty to hold governments, corporations and individuals accountable to the public have been eroded.
Prior to the time the statement was issued, the Ozaka-led Rivers Hoopers were on course to secure their third consecutive title in 2025, but were eliminated in two agonizing defeats to eventual champions Lagos Legends (Maktown Flyers), first in the playoff stage and then in the grand final.
The jarring question is why the hasty judgment against a team that has enjoyed a rich streak of form ahead of the 2025 NPBL. One would have expected the body to give room to the Ozaka-led management to right the wrongs in the 2026 NPBL and possibly offer solutions as a body.
Despite the misjudgment that the team is “experiencing decline caused by poor management”, the astute administrator, together with a vibrant and experienced coaching group led by Ogoh Odaudu, responded in the best possible way to regain the championship.

As Theodore Roosevelt once said: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who at best knows in the end the triumph of great achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place it will never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.’
With strategic planning, deliberate policies and pursuit of success, Ozaka once again added another title to his illustrious brilliant managerial career for a record seventh home championship within two months of issuing the release.
On the national front, he led Rivers Hoopers to NPBL titles in 2011, 2012, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2026; has won numerous premier national tournaments, including the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Basketball Cup, the Crown Elite Sports Basketball Championship, and the Louis Edem Foundation Basketball Championship.
On the continent, the team under his tutelage won the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Champions (2018), the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference Champions (2024) and made history as the first Nigerian team to reach the podium at the BAL, securing the bronze medal in Kigali, Rwanda in 2024. Others include the inaugural representatives of the BAL (2021) where they represented Nigeria in the historic inaugural season.
In conclusion, the pendulum has swung on the body to congratulate the management team and set the agenda for the Rivers State Government to host the victorious KingsMen and begin early preparations for the BAL.
