The long-awaited fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is finally scheduled to take place on December 11, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in Wales, England.
This comes after years of failed negotiations and public debate.
The choice of Cardiff followed a dispute over location. Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, preferred Wembley Stadium after the win in Jeddah. However, Joshua’s contract with the Saudi organizers backing the event requires him to fight in Britain, and staging the fight in America would mean reopening that deal.
A proposed date in New York at Madison Square Garden was cancelled.
Cardiff is a familiar venue for Joshua, who beat Carlos Takam there in 2017 and Joseph Parker in 2018.
Preparations are already underway in Dubai, where Joshua posted footage of himself on the Pravilo machine on Instagram. The device, which has its roots in Slavic and Russian training traditions, suspends him with his limbs spread wide while he twists his midriff close to 180 degrees.
British newspapers, including the Daily Mail and The Sun, labeled it “torture” training. Joshua joked in the caption, “When the instructor says, relax and breathe.”
Hearn believes the stakes are huge. Speaking after Pat Brown beat John Hedges on September 19, he said Joshua’s “entire career depends on this fight”.
“There is a sense of desperation to win this fight, and this is why sport is the greatest. I have never wanted to win a fight so much,” he said.
