Lagos-based Sporting Lagos FC goalkeeper Clinton Lawani has expressed his amazement at the huge crowd that turned up to watch his team’s match against Kano Pillars in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Sports247 reports that Lawani, a graduate of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and recent invitee to the national under-20 team, Flying Eagles, acknowledged that the turnout of fans at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano was massive.
He then said he was pleased that he and his teammates were not intimidated by the large number of partisan ‘Sai Madu Gida’ supporters in the stands, as his Lagos-based team was able to achieve a surprising 1-1 away draw.
Dramatically, Lawani was named man of the match, having produced an excellent performance and made several notable saves to prevent Kano Pillars from taking the three points in the matchday 7 match.
He thanked his teammates for making the award possible and revealed that his main objective this season is to help Sporting Lagos secure a continental spot at the end of the current campaign, marking the club’s first return to the top flight after winning promotion last season.
The youngster also revealed that he was very amazed playing against Pillars’ veteran duo of Ahmed Musa and Rabiu Alli, whom he described as vibrant inspirations on the path to success for young players like him.
“This is the biggest crowd I have ever played in front of. I am happy to play against big names like Ahmed Musa and Rabiu Ali,” said Lawani, who also encouraged other young NPFL players to stay focused and determined to make their breakthrough.
Sports247 further reports that Lawani’s impressive performance against Kano Pillars further underlined his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s most promising homegrown goalkeepers in the NPFL and on the national scene in general.
