Showtime Flag Football League Cup 5v5: Champions under threat as ten teams prepare for explosive opening day showdown

The battle for supremacy in Nigerian flag football takes an exciting new turn on Sunday, October 11, 2026, when the Showtime Flag Football League launches its 5v5 Cup at Showtime Arena, Meadow Hall, Lekki, Lagos.

Five mouth-watering matches headline Week 1, with ten teams preparing for a fierce competition that promises explosive attacking football, tactical battles and potentially stunning upsets.

The action begins at 1:20 pm, when former champions Abia Warriors take on Cross River Ikan Sports. The Warriors, who previously dominated the Showtime Bowl with back-to-back championship wins, face opponents determined to prove they belong among the competition’s elite.

Cross River Praise Miene has already proven his quality in the league, making this first meeting particularly intriguing.

Rivers Alphas and Lagos Rebels face off in another fascinating contest. Rebels quarterback Sulaimon Alhameen has proven his attacking credentials this season, while the Alphas will be desperate to establish themselves as serious contenders.

Next, the Delta Panthers take on the Ibom Raptors in a potentially unpredictable matchup. Both teams have the opportunity to make an immediate statement, and the initial momentum is likely to prove crucial in the competition.

Perhaps the biggest focus falls on Gateway Horns against Lagos Knights.

The Knights enter with the reputation of being the reigning Showtime Bowl champions after crushing the Abia Warriors 47–7 in the Series XIV final. Their championship pedigree, highlighted by MVP quarterback Kayode Mafe and offensive talent Fatai Praise, makes them formidable opponents, although Sunday’s participating players are not yet confirmed.

Lagos Greenbacks and Delta Braves complete the opening day matches. The Greenbacks will hope to replicate the offensive brilliance that has made them dangerous opponents, while the Braves have a chance to put together a spectacular performance.

As flag football prepares for its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, Showtime’s latest competition offers another glimpse into Nigeria’s growing talent pool.

For fans, the message is clear: expect intensity, fierce rivalries and upsets as the battle for 5v5 Cup glory begins.

The game is the show!
