Abuja (Key Reporters) – The Chief Medical Officer of the Force, Deputy Inspector General of Police, AIG Nkechi Eze, has urged personnel of the Nigerian Police Force to prioritize their mental health, seek regular medical care and support colleagues dealing with psychological issues.
Eze made the appeal in a message to commemorate the 2026 World Mental Health Day, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, extending goodwill to police personnel, their families and Nigerians.
She highlighted the importance of listening to people with lived experiences of mental health conditions, stressing that their voices, stories and perspectives should inform mental health policies, shape support services and improve community care.
She says creating an environment where people can talk openly about mental health challenges without fear of stigma or discrimination is essential to promoting psychological well-being.
The Medical Director of the Force also encouraged officers and men of the Force to undergo regular medical examinations and ensure their registration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to facilitate access to health services when necessary.
He emphasized that mental health awareness and access to adequate healthcare are important to building a healthier and more resilient police institution.
As part of the commemoration, Eze urged police personnel to listen with empathy, communicate with compassion and support each other in dealing with mental health challenges.
He noted that fostering a culture of mutual understanding and support would help create a more mentally aware police force and a healthier society.
