Temporary release for DG Fake Agency, PFIPC, Adeyemi as court overturns charges

There was temporary relief for the Director General (DG) of the alleged “non-existent” Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi on Monday.

This comes as the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed eight counts of forgery filed against him by the federal government.

Justice Mohammed Umar stayed further proceedings in the case following an application from the Federal Government, represented by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

Although charges were initially filed in court by the police, the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) took over the prosecution at the last postponed date.

When the case was filed on Monday, the DPPF informed the court that the AGF, after conducting a proper review of the case file, had found several loopholes on which to base its decision to withdraw the charges.

He told the court that the government had finalized plans to transfer the case to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court for fresh charges against the accused.

He also noted that documents allegedly forged by the accused during his operation against alleged fake agents could be prosecuted in the FCT High Court and not the Federal High Court.

The DPPF’s application for the charges to be dropped was not opposed by the defendant’s attorney, Mr Ibrahim Angulu, SAN.

Adeyemi, who has been in custody since July 14, when he was arrested on a bench warrant issued by a court, was charged with charges related to forgery, fraud and impersonation.

Following his plea of not guilty, the court ordered him detained in Kuje Prison and set a trial date.

The accused has pleaded with the court to consider his bail request, and insisted that he is suffering from an infectious disease that requires immediate medical attention from his doctor.

His request was opposed by prosecutors, who argued that the government had adequate facilities to meet his health needs.

A scheduled hearing on the bail application was thwarted by the withdrawal of charges.

Meanwhile, those previously called to testify in the case include the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila; Paul Immanuel; Jeremiah Imoukhede; and That’s Sylvester.

Other witnesses are civil servants working at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), Akimbo Shola and Adamu Balongu, as well as the Deputy Inspector of Police.
