National Police Bill 90% ready for National Assembly -Gbajabiamila

The Presidential Working Group said on Thursday that it would submit the National Policing Bill to the National Assembly within two weeks.

The Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, said this on Thursday, while speaking to journalists after a steering committee meeting at State House in Abuja.

“The National Policing Bill is more or less ready to be presented to the DPR. We will probably have one more meeting after this to resolve the issues and make sure all areas are covered. So, we are 90% ready.

“The governors have one or two observations, and we will be ready in about a week or so,” Gbajabiamila said.

He described the bill as ‘the administration’s most impactful bill so far’. He said his party had undergone heavy training in the last few weeks since the working group’s steering committee began discussions on August 3.

Also speaking on the possibility of states delaying the passage of the Sixth Constitutional Amendment (State Police) Bill, especially against the backdrop of information that only about six states have passed the amendment out of 36 states and the FCT, Gbajabiamila stressed that there is a “national consensus” among Nigerians on the need for the amendment.

“I don’t see any reason why anyone would want to rethink that,” he said.

Participants in Thursday’s meeting included the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRazak AbdulRahman, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, as well as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice represented by the Attorney General and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba.

Other members of the committee are Chairman of the Policy Advisory Committee, Hakim Abdullahi Liman (rtd); Head of the Nigerian Police Reform Secretariat, Professor Olu Ogunsakin; Special Advisor to the President for the National Assembly (House of Representatives), Dr Lanre Smart; Senior Special Assistant to the President for Planning and Research who also doubles as Committee Secretary, Nnadubem Moghalu; a representative of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association; and AIG Abraham Nabhon Thomas, representing the National Security Advisor.
