Imobi Monarch receives the cultural ambassador to Canada award and receives the royal honor from the mayor

Daud Olatunji

The King of Imobi, Oba Fatai Olatunji Ademiyewo Balogun, has received the Cultural Ambassador to Canada Award in recognition of his efforts to promote Yoruba culture and preserve indigenous heritage.

The award was presented to the monarch by the Ijebu Descendants Association of Canada, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural identity, traditions and heritage of the Ijebu people in the diaspora.

In further recognition of his contribution to cultural advancement, Oba Balogun also received a certificate of recognition from the Mayor of Haldimand County, Shelley Ann Bentley, and the Member of Provincial Parliament representing Haldimand-Norfolk, Bobbi Ann Brady.

The awards highlight the growing importance of cultural diplomacy and the role of traditional institutions in promoting indigenous identities and strengthening relationships between Nigeria and its international partners.

The recognition also highlights the contribution of Nigerian traditional rulers and diaspora organizations to sustaining cultural heritage beyond the country’s borders.

Through its activities, the Ijebu Descendants Association of Canada has continued to promote the traditions and identity of the Ijebu people among Nigerians living abroad and in the broader Canadian community.

Oba Balogun’s recognition is expected to further draw attention to the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people, whose traditions, customs and institutions remain significant elements of Yoruba identity.

Traditional rulers have continued to play an important role in preserving indigenous languages, customs, festivals and historical narratives, particularly as younger generations of diaspora Nigerians navigate life in multicultural societies.

The presentation of the Certificate of Recognition by the Haldimand County Mayor and provincial legislature also highlights the potential for collaboration between traditional institutions, diaspora associations and public officials in promoting cultural understanding.
