Cross River PDP Chairman Resigns

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing a crisis of direction and leadership coherence within the party ahead of the upcoming elections.

Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the national secretary of the party at the national secretariat at Wadata House in Abuja and copied to the state secretary in Cross River.

In the letter, the lawyer said he “could no longer effectively serve in this position” under circumstances that increasingly test the party’s principles, cohesion and sense of purpose.

He described the decision as exceptionally difficult, but said it was the result of deep introspection into the internal dynamics and disagreements affecting the party.

“As we enter a critical election season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as state president with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to undermine the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course,” he said.

Ikem warned that the divisions have significantly weakened the party’s effectiveness and could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of its loyal members if left unaddressed.

Ikem hints at a new political direction

The outgoing president has not identified the individuals or factions he holds responsible for the disagreements within the party. He also has not revealed his next political move.

However, he suggested his resignation could mark the start of a new political direction, saying he has reached a point where a clearer vision and a new path are needed for him and those who have placed their trust in him.

“Despite the challenges, I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served the Party for the past five years,” he said.

Ikem described his five-year tenure as a privilege, expressing appreciation to the leaders, members and supporters who worked with him during his time as president.

He especially thanked Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their encouragement and support during some of the most difficult moments in his political journey.

The former president also recognized PDP national leader and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, saying his contribution to the party’s collective efforts remained indelible and worthy of recognition.

He extended his appreciation to supporters across Cross River State, especially the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty, faith and commitment over the years.

“As I step away from this position, I remain committed to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and our nation,” Ikem said.

He also wished the PDP success in its future endeavors despite the challenges he identified among its ranks.

Ikem’s resignation comes as political activities gain momentum ahead of the upcoming elections, increasing uncertainty surrounding the PDP leadership and internal cohesion in Cross River State.

The development raises questions about the party’s next steps in the state as it seeks to manage internal disagreements and strengthen its political structure ahead of the election season.
