NIS DG Shaibu congratulates Oba of Benin on his birthday and 10th coronation anniversary

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has congratulated the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, on his 73rd birthday and the 10th anniversary of his coronation, describing the monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom and cultural preservation.

Shaibu, the immediate past deputy governor of Edo State, said the Benin monarch’s decade on the throne continued to inspire his subjects through his commitment to conserving the kingdom’s heritage, promoting peace and strengthening traditional institutions.

In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, Shaibu commended the leadership of Oba Ewuare II since his accession to the throne in October 2016, stressing that the monarch has continued to uphold the dignity of the traditional institution of Benin and promote the cultural identity of his people.

The NIS chief also prayed for long life, good health and divine wisdom for the monarch, wishing him a joyous birthday celebration and a memorable 10th coronation anniversary.

A decade on the throne

Oba Ewuare II was crowned the 40th Oba of Benin in October 2016, succeeding his father, the late Oba Erediauwa, who died in April that year.

His reign represents an important chapter in the history of one of Africa’s most enduring traditional institutions, whose influence is deeply connected to the political, cultural and social identity of the Edo people.

The monarchy of Benin has historically been the custodian of the customs, traditions, arts and collective memory of the kingdom. His palace remains an important center for traditional authority, cultural ceremonies and engagement with communities, government officials and other stakeholders.

For Shaibu, the 10th anniversary offers an opportunity to recognize the role of the monarch in sustaining the institution and encouraging subsequent generations to value their legacy.

The anniversary celebrations, which began in October and run until November 2026, feature activities that highlight Benin’s culture, history, art and community life. The program reflects the importance placed on the milestone by the palace and the wider Benin community.

Preserve the rich cultural heritage of Benin

One of the primary responsibilities of the Oba of Benin is the preservation of the cultural heritage of the kingdom, including its renowned artistic traditions, royal customs, language and historical artefacts.

The Kingdom of Benin is internationally recognized for its sophisticated artistic heritage, particularly its bronze and brass works, ivory sculptures, and other objects associated with the royal court. These works represent centuries of craftsmanship and remain significant to discussions of African history, cultural identity, and the restitution of looted artifacts.

The recovery and return of Benin artefacts taken during the 1897 British Punitive Expedition have also become important issues in contemporary cultural diplomacy. Efforts to return such objects have renewed public attention to the kingdom’s history and the need to preserve its heritage for future generations.

Oba Ewuare II has been associated with advocating for the return of looted Benin artefacts and the protection of the kingdom’s cultural heritage.

Shaibu’s congratulatory message places emphasis on these broader responsibilities of traditional leadership, describing the monarch as a source of wisdom and a figure whose reign should continue to inspire pride and cultural unity.

The recognition also highlights the importance of traditional institutions in a modern society where cultural identity, community values and historical consciousness remain important elements of national life.

Monarch as a symbol of unity and peace

Shaibu described Oba Ewuare II as a symbol of unity and fatherly love, highlighting the value of leadership that encourages peaceful coexistence and strengthens bonds between members of a community.

Traditional rulers continue to occupy important positions in Nigeria’s social structure, particularly in matters relating to cultural preservation, community relations and the promotion of dialogue between different groups.

Although their constitutional roles differ from those of elected political officials, monarchs often serve as custodians of tradition and influential voices in community affairs.

In Edo State, the Benin Throne has particular historical and cultural significance. The position of the Oba connects the current generation with the long history of the kingdom, while the palace remains a focal point for the observance of traditional rites and the preservation of customs.

Shaibu’s tribute reflects the importance of recognizing leadership that promotes continuity, peace and a sense of shared identity among the people.

His prayer for divine wisdom and continued good health also conveys the expectation that the monarch will maintain his responsibilities to the kingdom as he enters another year of life and marks a decade on the throne.

Shaibu connection with Edo State

Shaibu, who served as deputy governor of Edo State from 2016 to 2024, has maintained a public profile in the political and administrative affairs of the state. His message to the Oba comes from a former senior civil servant who served during part of the monarch’s reign.

As the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the NIS, Shaibu now heads a federal institution responsible for professional training and capacity development in Nigeria’s sports sector.

His appointment has brought renewed attention to the institute’s role in developing coaches, sports administrators and other professionals needed to strengthen the country’s sports system.

While his current responsibilities are focused on sports development, Shaibu’s congratulatory message highlights the continuing role of traditional institutions in public life and the importance of recognizing cultural touchstones.

His remarks also reflect the close relationship between the identity of the Edo people and the Benin monarchy, whose historical influence extends beyond the state to Nigeria’s broader cultural heritage.

The anniversary marks a milestone for the Kingdom of Benin

The 10th coronation anniversary is not only a personal milestone for Oba Ewuare II, but also an opportunity for the Benin Kingdom to reflect on its history, traditions and future.

The anniversary program provides a platform to showcase cultural practices and draw attention to the kingdom’s artistic and historical contributions. It also offers opportunities for younger generations to engage with their heritage and understand the significance of the traditional institution.

As the celebrations continue, the monarch’s birthday adds another dimension to the occasion, bringing together prayers for his personal well-being and hopes for the kingdom’s continued stability and development.

Shaibu expressed hope that Oba Ewuare II will continue to enjoy good health, long life and divine guidance, while maintaining his commitment to the well-being of his people.

He wished the monarch a joyous birthday and a memorable 10th coronation anniversary, praying that the years ahead will bring greater peace, progress and prosperity to Benin Kingdom, Edo State and Nigeria.
