2027: Coalition against Tinubu inaugurates committee, hopes Atiku, Obi and others can work together

Ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, the proposed coalition of opposition parties seeking to oust President Bola Tinubu has progressed smoothly, with the formalization of legal and media committees to provide a framework for negotiations between the leading parties and their presidential candidates.

Opposition leaders associated with the coalition called G100 include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and others.

Additionally, the Young Progressive Party (YPP) presidential candidate, Peter Agada, said he was awaiting calls from the NDC’s Peter Obi and the ADC’s Atiku Abubakar, stressing his willingness to work with either or both opposition figures, provided they are in line with his plans for Nigeria.

Chairman of the G100 Coalition, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, who presided over the inauguration, claimed that discussions involving the party leadership and presidential candidates had advanced. He expressed confidence that outstanding issues could be resolved before the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

“Our ambition was to present a candidate who could defeat APC and form the next government, and we made very good progress,” he said.

The meeting was attended by the chairmen and representatives of ADC, NDC, PRP, SDP, Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Democrat Party (PDP).

Gombe said the inauguration of the committees marked a deliberate step to translate the coalition’s political intentions into a structured process capable of sustaining negotiations and overcoming potential obstacles to an agreement.

“Today, we are taking a deliberate step from intention to structure. The work of this coalition will be judged not only on the strength of our convictions, but also on the discipline, precision and unity with which we carry it out,” he said.

A legal committee, consisting of national legal advisors from the participating parties and other senior legal representatives, as agreed, is expected to examine the legal and constitutional implications of the proposed alliance.

Its responsibilities include reviewing outstanding legal challenges facing the parties, examining the actions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in light of relevant Supreme Court decisions, and advising the coalition on the legitimate options available to it.

The committee will also review working group documents and negotiated agreements, identify potential legal risks, recommend safeguards and establish dispute resolution mechanisms before a coalition agreement is adopted.

Gombe warned members not to ignore legal issues that could jeopardize the negotiations.

“We can’t afford surprises. One overlooked clause can undo months of honest negotiations,” he said, urging members to show rigor, candor and independent judgment.

The media and publicity committee, consisting of national publicity secretaries and presidential campaign board spokespeople from the participating parties, is expected to coordinate joint messaging, media engagement, and public announcements.
