By Joseph Amedu, Lokoja

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, Dr. Shehu Wahab, REC Resident Electoral Commissioner, of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC for Kogi State, has urged political parties and their candidates to embrace peaceful campaigns as they seek to gain votes from the electorate.

Wahab made the appeal during a meeting he held on Monday with political party chairmen and their candidates in Kogi State at the INEC headquarters in Lokoja.

He advised political parties to undertake campaigns that do not spark violence or overheat the political system.

“Political parties and their candidates should avoid the use of hate speech

“They should also avoid slander campaigns and religious sentiments

“Your campaigns should be focused on issue-based issues and not insults and no masquerade should be used to campaign”

He assured that INEC will provide a level playing field for all political parties and their candidates.

“We will ensure fairness and justice for all political parties and their candidates”

He advised eligible voters who are yet to collect their voter ID card to do so without further delay to enable them exercise their right to vote

Speaking on the party’s campaigns and security implications in the current political arena in Kogi State, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, acknowledged the fact that Kogi has so far not experienced any serious violence.

The PC, however, urged the people of the state, especially the youth, to continue to campaign peacefully ahead of the general elections.

He warned that campaigns should not be carried out in churches and mosques across the state.

He also warned against clashes between rival political supporters as security would not hesitate to deal with perpetrators of such acts.

On security coverage during election campaigns, Kankarofi ensured equal treatment for all political parties and their candidates.

Other discussions held during the meeting focused on the synopsis of political campaign guidelines and regulations and the role of party leadership in managing political parties’ campaigns.
