The UN Human Rights Office warns of a deepening ‘nightmare’ of displacement in Gaza

OHCHR said that Israel has stated that they aim to increase the military deployment area to 70 percent of the Gaza area.

The incessant contraction of space has led to new displacements in areas bordering the “yellow line” demarcation.

Military expansion, reports of attacks

Over the past two weeks, OHCHR documented the westward expansion of Israeli military deployment areas in Al Shujaiyeh, Gaza City, and in three locations in Central Gaza – eastern Al Bureij, eastern Deir Al-Balah, and eastern Al Maghazi.

In Al Shujaiyeh, at least two Israeli attacks were reported on refugee campswhile troops reportedly used explosive robots to blow up several buildings still standing in the area.

OHCHR said they received reports that on October 25, an Israeli drone dropped ammunition on tents sheltering refugee families at the Al Shujaiyeh crossing near the yellow line and caused a fire to burn for five hours.

As a result, 200 families consisting of 800 people – mostly women, children and elderly people – were displacedaccording to the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

Little hope of returning

“The nightmare of displacement in Gaza is acute and chronic,” said Ajith Sunghay, UN Human Rights Chief in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).

“Those who fled before the ceasefire was announced, had no chance of returning to the areas they fled, most of which were inaccessible because they were outside the yellow line. And they continued to flee again and again.”

OHCHR said that as an occupying power, Israel must stop the forced displacement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, noting that this is a war crime that may also constitute a crime against humanity.

Israel must also facilitate the safe and dignified return of Palestinians to their homes and the areas where they have sought refuge.

On the contrary, its military operations have displaced almost the entire population multiple times in addition to damaging and destroying buildings, structures and civilian infrastructure.

Shelter materials are limited

OHCHR said that Israeli forces appeared to be treating the yellow line as a killing zonepreventing Palestinians from returning to their remaining homes on the other side.

In addition, the displacement crisis is exacerbated by restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of humanitarian aid related to shelters.

“This suffering must end. This is the fourth year of displacement for most of Gaza’s Palestinians, the fourth winter in tents too flimsy to withstand the rain, and they are still under fire throughout.said Mr. Sunghay. “Let this be the last.”
