The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has lamented what it described as a smear campaign against immediate past Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Addressing the media Wednesday in Abuja, the national coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged Nigerians to exercise discernment and critical thinking when faced with sensational and unverified claims against public figures.

He said: “In recent times, we have received credible information and evidence pointing to the existence of powerful political forces that are exerting undue pressure on civil society organisations, the media, and other actors in Abuja and Lagos, with the intention of fabricating false scandals and launching a strategic media campaign to tarnish the image of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

“These forces are motivated by ulterior motives and are seeking to smear his reputation. It is imperative that we bring this matter to the public’s attention to ensure transparency and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

“Therefore, these sinister plots and politically motivated allegations against him are not only baseless but also part of a deliberate effort by certain individuals to tarnish his image. We believe that these individuals are acting out of self-interest and fear that Ugwuanyi may be considered for a significant political appointment from President Tinubu.”
