WAUG 2026 athletics results: OAU leads 110m hurdles, Ghana wins 800m gold

Obafemi Awolowo University (OUA), Universities of Ghana and Lead City University featured prominently in the athletics events at the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) 2026, with Owoeye Timileyin Gideon of OAU recording the fastest time among the listed athletes in the 110m hurdles and Ghana taking gold in the 800m.

Owoeye Timileyin Gideon of the OAU recorded 15.26 seconds in the 110 meters hurdles to lead the listed results, finishing ahead of Philip Boateng of the University of Development Studies (UDS), who recorded 15.33 seconds.

Evans Gyan of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) followed with 15.64 seconds, while Eke Elijah of the University of Ibadan (UI) recorded 17.90 seconds. Ogini Adekunle of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) completed the listed results in 21.79 seconds.

Ghana wins gold in 800 meters and OAU takes silver

In the 800 meters event at WAUG 2026, Ghana took the gold medal, while the OAU took the silver and also placed another athlete in fourth position, giving the Nigerian university two athletes in the top four.

Lead City University took the bronze medal, ensuring the podium included competition beyond Ghana’s gold medal success.

OAU’s double presence in the top four contributed to the university’s performance at the games, while Ghana’s victory underlined the competitive strength of its university athletes in the 800 metres.

WAUG 2026 athletics competition intensifies

The 110m hurdles and 800m events have added to the excitement surrounding the 15th West African University Games, which brings together university athletes competing for medals and recognition across the region.
