ATBU student died defending girlfriend from suspected phone snatchers – Police

The Bauchi State police command has dismissed claims that the slain 500-level student of Geology at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Joseph Agabaidu, was attacked by suspected armed robbers.

Agabaidu died in a hospital at about 7.00 p.m. on Saturday after he was fatally wounded by unknown persons in Yelwa area of the state.

However, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, who addressed the leadership of two Students bodies of ATBU, National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBAS) and the Students Union Government (SUG) at the state police command on Wednesday, said the deceased was stabbed while defending his girlfriend from suspected phone snatchers on that fateful day.

He said: “The incident occurred on 02/12/2023 when some unknown persons whose number has not been ascertained snatched a handbag containing a mobile phone belonging to a lady, one Philomena Ahobee, ’28 years, a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic (ATAP) Bauchi.

“The girl’s boyfriend, late Agbaidu Joseph, aged 28 years of Anguwan Ngas who is a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa university (ATBU) Bauchi tried to help her to retrieve the handbag containing the phone and in the process the assailant(s) stabbed him on the left-side of his chest with a sharp knife.

The victim was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi for treatment but he was certified dead while on admission by a medical doctor.”
