Calafiori’s own goal gives Spain victory over Italy

Spain has booked a place in the round of 16 of Euro 2024 after defeating Italy 1-0 on Thursday.

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept his team in the game throughout the first half, deflecting Pedri’s header and denying Alvaro Morata from a tight angle before making a brilliant fingertip save from a long-range shot from Fabian Ruiz.

An own goal by Italian Riccardo Calafiori in the 55th minute gave Spain victory in the first clash of international heavyweights in this Euro Cup.

Three-time winners Spain completely dominated the Group B match at Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins Arena, and 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal further enhanced his reputation as one of football’s most exciting young stars with a standout performance.

The victory means Spain leads the group with six points to qualify for the next round, while Italy will hope for a positive result against Croatia in their final match.
