Nigerian Embassy, ​​NGO, rescues 24 girls trafficked for prostitution in Senegal

The Nigerian Embassy in Senegal in collaboration with the Dakar-based Non-Governmental Organization, “La Lumiere”, which means “Free the Slaves” in English, has rescued 24 Nigerian girls who were trafficked to the country for prostitution.

Acting Nigerian Ambassador to Senegal, Salihu Abubakar, who disclosed this at a press conference in Dakar on Sunday, said the joint operation of the Nigerian Embassy and NGOs rescued girls who were subjected to sexual exploitation in the Tamaccounda and Kedougou regions of the West African country. .

According to Abubakar, most of the girls are minors, aged between 11, 13, and 24, and are trafficked to Senegal, via Cotonou, Benin Republic, through the Mali border to Senegal for sexual exploitation.

“These girls and many others are trafficked to Senegal, through Cotonou, Benin Republic through Mali to the Senegal border for prostitution,” said Abubakar.

The envoy stated that preliminary investigations revealed that most of the out-of-school girls were from Edo and Delta States, some of them were from Imo and Abia States, while two others were from Plateau State.

However, he said of the 24 people, 22 had been repatriated several weeks ago, while the other two women were repatriated to Nigeria on Saturday and had landed in Nigeria safely.

“Our main goal and number one priority is to prevent the trafficking of Nigerian girls to any part of the world for prostitution under any guise,” Abubakar said.

Abubakar added that the successful repatriation of the girls to Nigeria was a clear indication of strengthening international cooperation in combating human trafficking between the Senegalese embassy and NGOs.
