“It’s a fantastic performance, but I consider it a failure” – Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogumodede reflects on the NPFL season

Remo Stars head coach Daniel Ogumodede has expressed mixed feelings about the recently concluded Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. Despite leading his team to a commendable second place, Ogumodede admitted that he fell short of his personal goal of topping the league.

Reflecting on the campaign, Ogumodede praised his players for their remarkable performance and dedication. β€œFor the group, for the team, I say congratulations. It’s a fantastic performance. Personally, as a coach, I am very proud of them,” Ogumodede said. β€œHis resilience, hard work and discipline of his throughout the season were outstanding. Congratulations to them and the club.”

However, the coach also expressed his personal disappointment at not having achieved his main goal. β€œAs for my personal goal, I consider it a failure because the goal from the beginning of the season was clear: to be one step ahead of last season. We were second last season; We wanted to be first this season, obviously, and unfortunately we couldn’t. We slipped and finished second again.”

Remo Stars finished the season five points behind league champions Enugu Rangers, a notable gap compared to the previous season when they missed out on the title by just one goal difference. Ogumodede acknowledged the different challenges the league’s full-season format poses this year compared to last season’s shortened format.

β€œThey are two different league formats. Last season was a shortened format, more difficult in itself. This season was a marathon and brought different learnings,” he explained. “We need to accept responsibility for everything that happened during the season.”

Looking ahead to the CAF Champions League, where last time Remo Stars were eliminated in the first round, Ogumodede is optimistic. β€œWe always want to be better. β€œThat is what we intend to do,” he stated, highlighting the club’s commitment to improving on the continental scene.

As Remo Stars prepare for the next challenge, Ogumodede’s reflections serve as a celebration of their achievements and a call to leverage their experiences for greater success in the future.
