Nigerian wrestlers begin Olympic training in Germany

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has announced that training of its overseas wrestlers for the 2024 Paris Olympics will begin on Monday in Saarbrucken, Germany.

NWF President Daniel Igali shared this information with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Ibadan, stating that the overseas training will follow the current local camp in Yenagoa which concludes on Sunday.

β€œPreparations for the Olympic Games are in full swing. We have been at camp in Yenagoa for over two weeks and so far training is going well. We have five athletes who will participate in the Olympic Games and three training partners in each camp.

β€œThe only man among the Olympic-bound wrestlers is not in the camp yet, and that is Ashton Mutuwa, who is based in the US. Adekuoroye, who is also based in the US, has joined us. Mutuwa will be joining the overseas camp due to his peculiar situation.

“He has very good training partners in the United States and we want this to continue because we are very happy with his training situation there, which we are following very closely,” he said.

Igali assured that Mutuwa’s training is being closely monitored and that the NWF is satisfied with his progress so far, while mentioning that Adekuoroye has focused on pace and strength training.

β€œWe believe she has good training partners here in Nigeria who will really strengthen her for the Olympics, because we have high hopes for her in these Olympics,” the NWF president added.

He revealed that while the wrestlers are expected to camp in Germany for three weeks, the federation expects them to remain there until the end of July.

“This is because we will not start competing until August 5 and we would like to move into the Games Village four days before our events,” Igali concluded.
