●As NNPC plans to build three LNG stations, 100 CNG sites
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mallam Mele Kyari, has said that the effort to bring Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) closer to Nigerians has already begun and is irreversible.
Kyari, who made this known on Thursday during the simultaneous inauguration of 12 CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos, said that in addition to the massive deployment of CNG stations across the country, NNPC Ltd and its partners will also construct three Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) stations in Ajaokuta.
“There is simply no way we can go back on the provision of CNG for all Nigerians. It is the right thing to do. Is it late? Yes, but we will make progress, we will bridge the gap to ensure that the volatility we see with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) does not apply to gas,” Kyari said.
The GCEO commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the necessary support to promote the use of domestic gas, with the aim of providing Nigerians with a cleaner and cheaper source of energy.
While assuring that NNPC Ltd will continue to implement other strategic gas projects for the benefit of Nigerians, in line with the Presidential CNG initiative aimed at bringing prosperity to all Nigerians, Kyari reiterated NNPC’s determination to ensure the nation’s energy security.
Speaking on the occasion, the Managing Director of NNPC Retail Limited, Mr. Huub Stokman, revealed that in the coming year, NNPC Retail will have launched over 100 CNG sites, including 16 NNPC Gas Marketing and NIPCO Gas JV sites.
“CNG provides Nigeria with affordable alternatives to available fuel products. It will be approximately 40% cheaper than petrol in Nigeria and with continued investment, it will become a significant part of our energy mix,” Stokman added.
In his address, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Honourable Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the inauguration of the stations will not only bring economic benefits by creating jobs and boosting local economies, but will also contribute significantly to Nigeria’s national goals of reducing emissions and tackling climate change.
For his part, the NNPC Board Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, said greater adoption of CNG will bring economic benefits by reducing fuel costs for both consumers and businesses.
Following the elimination of fuel subsidies and the declaration of the Presidential Initiatives on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), NNPC Limited has taken the lead in the implementation of CNG auto filling stations across Nigeria.
NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, a subsidiary of NNPC Limited, in collaboration with NIPCO Gas Limited has already developed an Auto-CNG distribution plan for the construction of thirty-five (35) CNG stations in various geographical areas of Nigeria.
