As Nigeria’s senior national team players prepare to work with a new coach when the team regroups for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, a former player of the team has issued a warning to whoever gets the nod as the team’s new coach.
Nigeria will appoint a new coach before the matches following the departure of Finidi George from his post following a poor showing in World Cup qualifying, where they drew 1-1 with South Africa, before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic.
Speaking about the team, 2013 African Cup of Nations winner Efe Ambrose said the main headache the coach will have is getting the team’s forwards to score goals. He said that while many focus on the defence, it is the attack that has failed to flourish as expected.
“A lot of people like to blame the defence, but it is the attack, with players like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface and company, that is struggling. You can excuse Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon for their work, their effort and their contribution, but not the others,” said Ambrose. Own goal Nigeria.com.
“Boniface is yet to score for the Super Eagles and while we know he is very talented, it hasn’t worked out so far due to what I can say is a lack of balance in style and the way players are deployed in attack. That is what the new coach should focus more on,” he concluded.
