Court rules corruption trial of Ganduje and his wife to continue despite their absence

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu of the Kano State High Court on Thursday ruled that the trial of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, and his wife will proceed despite their absence.

The Kano State government has filed eight charges of bribery and abuse of power against Ganduje, his wife, Hafsat Umar, and six others.

The other defendants are – Abubakar Bawuro; Umar Abdullahi Umar; Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

They are accused of bribery, embezzlement and diversion of public funds totaling billions of naira from 2015 to 2023.

The court on June 5 issued an order to serve Ganduje and the other accused through substituted service.

The former governor then approached the Federal High Court, Kano, to stop the trial.

At Thursday’s hearing, Justice Adamu-Aliyu dismissed the state government’s application for an arrest warrant against the defendants.

“The trial of the defendants continues even though they are not present,” he said.

He adjourned the case until October 23 and 24 for preliminary objections and main charges.
