President Bola Tinubu formed a committee to address the food crisis in the country.
The committee, the Presidential Food System Coordination Unit (PFSCU), is expected to find solutions to the food crisis and rising food costs in the country.
PFSCU will also coordinate all agricultural activities in Nigeria.
Chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima with several state governors, local government representatives, development partners and other important stakeholders as members.
Shettima, who inaugurated the unit on behalf of the president at the State House, Abuja, on Friday, lamented that Nigeria was facing a rare food security crisis that badly needed ideas and resources from stakeholders.
He said: βThis nation is facing a rare food security crisis and the sooner we wake up to this reality, the better.
βFood insecurity threatens the foundations of our democratic experiment and this is why all parties must be involved.
βWe are experiencing a food security crisis, but this crisis also allows us to re-engineer and reposition this country on a more solid footing.β
Many Nigerians protested the rising prices of food and other goods in the country earlier this year.
The protests which started in Niger State gradually spread to Ogun, Oyo and some parts of Lagos State before the government took action to address the problem and prevent breakdown of law and order.
