Ajibade refuses to blame teammate for loss to Canada

Super Falcons midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade admitted they faced formidable opposition in Canada during their training camp in Seville.

The teams played a friendly match behind closed doors on Wednesday and the Super Falcons narrowly lost 1-0 in regular time before claiming a 5-4 victory in a penalty shootout.

Midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of the match in their preparation for the Olympic Games.

β€œIt wasn’t a bad test match. We lost 1-0, but it wasn’t bad,” Ajibade said.

β€œWe had some good moments in the match, but we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities. It was a good match that helped us prepare for the tournament, so now we know what we have to work on and move forward.”

A mistake by Deborah Abiodun allowed Canada to score the only goal of the match in regulation time.

However, Ajibade was quick to defend her teammate.

β€œMistakes happen and that was precisely the problem,” said the Super Falcons captain.

β€œAt this high level of football, when you make mistakes like this against players with a lot of experience, they always take advantage of them,” he said.

β€œWe have to be more clinical and disciplined and also take advantage of the opportunities we have.”

Although some players have not played high-intensity matches for a few weeks, Ajibade said the team is finding its rhythm as it prepares for the Games.

β€œIt was a good test match and although some of the players hadn’t played a high-intensity match in maybe two or three weeks, I think we’ve found our rhythm now and are getting ready for the tournament.”

Nigeria will compete in Group C against football powerhouses Brazil, Spain and Japan.
