The Secret Service says it has denied Trump additional resources in recent years, despite his team’s complaints

Former President Donald Trump’s security detail had complained that the Secret Service had not provided him with enough resources and personnel over the past two years, and the agency admitted on Saturday that it had rejected some requests.

A spokesperson for the secret service said in a statement Saturday that the agency had not provided certain resources in the past, but had instead made other security measures available, including through local partners.

The news comes amid widespread concern over how a sniper gained access to the roof of a building about 500 feet from Trump’s position during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last week.

The Washington Post and The New York Times reported Saturday morning that the Secret Service had rejected Trump’s security team’s previous request over the past two years.

Investigators believe Trump’s potential assassin flew a drone over the rally site on the day of the shooting.

Some people close to the former president believed that the decisions, which they considered personal to Trump, came from the agency’s top brass.

While Trump maintains close relationships with members of his Secret Service, relations between those agents and the agency’s highest ranks have long been strained, according to several sources familiar with the situation.

In response to CNN’s questions about whether the Secret Service had denied additional security requests, a spokesperson told CNN that the agency makes “adjustments” when certain resources are not provided to protected individuals.

“In some cases where specific Secret Service units or specialized resources were not provided, the agency has made adjustments to ensure the safety of the protected person,” Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s communications director, wrote in a statement. “This may include using state or local partners to provide specialized functions or otherwise identifying alternatives to reduce a protected person’s public exposure.”

Guglielmi said in a statement the day after the shooting that claims that Trump had been denied additional security requests specifically for the Pennsylvania rally were false.

“This is absolutely false. In fact, we have added protection resources, technology, and capabilities as part of the increased campaign travel pace,” Guglielmi wrote on X.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is facing a barrage of questions over how a gunman gained an unobstructed view of Trump at the rally, and members of Congress, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have called for her resignation.

Cheatle will likely face questions about these issues during his testimony this week before several congressional committees about the security lapses that led to the assassination attempt. [CNN]
