Nigerian government sets July 31 deadline for civil service verification

The Federal Government has set a deadline of July 31 for all civil servants to complete the mandatory verification process through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) portal.

This move aims to eliminate shadow workers and ensure payroll records are accurate.

Concerns Addressed, Time Pressure Increases:

The announcement follows unverified reports of plans to defer salaries for civil servants.

The verification process requires individuals to provide their IPPIS number, salary account number, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).

A surge in TIN applications at Federal Inland Revenue Services offices across the country suggests some civil servants may face challenges in meeting the deadline.

Previous Efforts and Expected Results:

This is not the first time the government has conducted a civil servant verification exercise. Previous efforts have yielded results in identifying and removing shadow employees from the payroll. However, the current deadline creates a sense of urgency for many civil servants who may have previously put off the verification process.

Impact on Efficiency and Transparency:

A successful verification exercise can have significant positive impacts. By eliminating shadow workers, the government can ensure that public funds are directed to legitimate salaries and benefits. In addition, a more accurate payroll system can improve budgeting and resource allocation in the civil service.
