Accord Party and APC clash over vandalism of campaign billboards in Osun

The Campaign Council of the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun on Friday exchanged words over the vandalism of campaign billboards ahead of the August 15 gubernatorial election in the state.

The Accord Party Campaign Council accused the APC of masterminding the destruction of its campaign billboards.

However, the APC denied the allegations.

Accord Party Campaign Council spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said in a statement on Friday in Osogbo that campaign billboards of the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Governor Adekola Adeleke, were vandalized in some areas of the state, allegedly by APC supporters.

Olajengbesi described the development as “dangerous and a threat to the democratic process.”

“TICC wishes to immediately draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police, security agencies and election observers to the increasing pattern of politically motivated violence and coordinated vandalism across the state perpetrated by desperate elements associated with the APC.

“In the early hours of this morning, billboards belonging to the Imole Campaign and the Accord Party were vandalized and destroyed in several areas of the state.

“This is not ordinary politics. This is a direct threat to democratic engagement, political freedom and peaceful participation in the electoral process,” he said.

He, however, said Adeleke remained focused on governance, development and service delivery to the people of the state.

“No amount of intimidation or coordinated attacks can suppress the democratic will of society,” he added.

But in a statement, the Chairman of the APC Media and Publicity Committee for the governorship election, Oluremi Omowaiye, described the allegations as baseless.

Omotayo said: ” Instead, campaign billboards and promotional materials for the APC candidate, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, were destroyed by members of the Accord Party.

“This latest lie—defacing billboards and blaming our party—is one of the diversionary tactics employed by those consuming state resources.

“The people of Osun are not fooled by these tactics. They are eagerly awaiting August 15 to elect this government democratically.

“Relevant security authorities have been briefed, and we expect appropriate action without delay.”
