Another midfielder leaves Super Eagles squad for AFCON qualifiers

Nigeria’s senior team has suffered a setback ahead of its first match of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers later this month, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria will participate in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers by opening their campaign at home against Madagascar on the 25th, before traveling to meet Guinea-Bissau in Morocco four days later.

Ahead of the match, coach Eric Chelle is sweating over the fitness of two midfielders, Frank Onyeka, who reportedly suffered a broken arm against Brighton last weekend in the English Premier League.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has returned to training but is not yet fit to be considered for action after spending two weeks on the sidelines. Chelle has other new concerns in midfield.

Alhassan Yusuf, who was the star of the Unity Cup summer tournament, was expected to play a prominent role in both matches, but his New England Revolution team has just announced that he will spend time on the sidelines.

“Forward Jack Harrison and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf are expected to miss at least six weeks of MLS action as they rehabilitate injuries sustained during our 2-1 win over New York City FC on Wednesday, September 9. Harrison suffered a proximal quadriceps injury, while Yusuf is out with a hamstring strain,” a club statement read.
