ASUU issues threat over ‘distorted implementation’ of 2025 agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened another strike over the failure of the Federal Government to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached by both parties.

The union issued the warning at the National Executive Council meeting held at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, on May 9 and 10.

ASUU, in a statement signed on Monday by its President, Chris Piwuna, condemned the agreement as a “distorted and uncoordinated” implementation of the agreement by the federal and state governments.

The union also criticized the selective application of agreement components such as Consolidated Academic Allowances, Earned Academic Allowances, and Professorial Allowances by federal university administrators.

They also blamed the National Research Council and the Minister of Education’s announcement regarding the National Research and Innovation Development Fund proposed by the federal government.

“This interactive session was held to present the results of our review of the implementation of the signed agreements and other important issues following the NEC meeting held at Modibbo Adama University, 9-10 May 2026,” the statement read.

The union began a two-week national warning strike on October 13, 2025, over the government’s failure to honor the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.

University teachers demanded payment of salary arrears, increased funding and university autonomy at the time.
