Awoniyi’s injury forces FIFA to try a new off -game technology in the Club World Cup

The FIFA World Football Governing Agency will evaluate the use of “Advanced Semi -automatized technology from offside” in the Club World Cup in an attempt to stop the type of scene that saw the Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi placed in an induced coma.

Awoniyi was out of play without his knowledge, but allowed to play for the assistant referee due to the fact that Var will intervene in case of goal, but did not happen and the Nigerian ended in an unpleasant collection with the goal post.

He was allowed to play after a medical exam, but 24 hours later he was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery that led him to be placed in an induced coma. Since then he has recovered.

FIFA will use the next Club World Cup to test a system that provides a quick audio signal in the wizard’s ear, instructing them to raise the flag in very obvious off situations, such as Awoniyi. It has already been successfully followed in the Intercontinental Cup in December, and in several youth tournaments.

In a statement, FIFA said the system “would track the positions of the players and the ball, providing automated alerts in real time for officials to coincide in case of clear displacements.”

However, this does not mean an end of the offside flag that often frustrates supporters, and most offsides would still have to be validated before making the decision. It is not suggested that technology be quick or advanced enough to intervene in closer decisions.

This remains a trial, approved by the IFAB, and is not yet approved for use throughout football or Premier League.

β€œI am sure that, for the 117 party officials selected for the FIFA 2025 Club World Cup, being among those who participate in the competition the first time is very exciting, because they will be part of the history of football.

“These innovations demonstrate FIFA’s commitment to use technology and improve the general football experience, with a particular emphasis on improving transparency and understanding of arbitration decisions,” said Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA Referees Committee.
