Newly appointed Portuguese Benfica coach Marco Silva has handed over a first-team spot to 19-year-old Nigerian striker Peter Edokpolor for the start of pre-season training, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Fresh from signing a two-year extension to his stay at the club, Silva, who replaced Jose Mourinho, will use the pre-season matches to impose the rule on the Nigerian youngster.
Signed from an academy in Abuja in January 2025, shortly after turning 18, he has played two roles, namely as a forward and winger, comparing himself to one of his former players, Darwin Núñez.
Last year he started with the U-23, but midway through the season he was promoted to the reserve team, where he still played 19 games, only two as a starter, adding 523 minutes and three goals.
He is a player whose evolution stands out in this year and a half at the club. Tactically and technically he has improved a lot and will seek to be a pillar of the first team with Silva.
