The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki has nominated former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan’s candidature was approved on Saturday during a special national convention held at the party office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja.
Jonathan absent from the convention
Although Jonathan was not present at the scene, his certificate of return was received in his name by Fred Agbedi, a member of the Bayelsa State House of Representatives.
Factions clashed over Jonathan’s planned ratification
The faction led by Turaki had initially planned to hold its convention at the A-Class Park and Event Center.
Strong FCTA directive for event centers
However, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed hotel and event center owners to deal only with the leadership of political parties recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP faction supported by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is recognized by the election umpire.
Blueprint.ng recalls that the FCT minister described the directive as a safety measure ahead of the 2027 general elections. The statement specifically warned operators to carefully screen their customers.
“In this political season, owners of event centers and hotels in particular must ensure that they only deal with political party leadership recognized by INEC regarding the use of their facilities,” the FCTA directive states.
While both factions maintain their position, former President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to make an official comment regarding his purported presidential ambition for 2027.
