COAS commissions accommodation for staff and is committed to improving welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel through the provision of decent accommodation for officers and soldiers in all formations.

The Army Chief stated this on Tuesday when he commissioned the new construction of Officers’ and Soldiers’ Quarters at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja.

The project reports that the newly completed accommodation projects included the residence of the Nigerian Army Aviation Coordinator, residences of 2 deputy coordinators, five blocks of six flats, accommodation for individual officers, accommodation for 27 senior non-commissioned officers and 80 corporals and under wuarters.

According to him, today’s event marks another significant milestone in our collective efforts to build a stronger, more professional and welfare-oriented Nigerian Army.

He said the commissioning of the residential facilities represents the Army’s commitment to the well-being of personnel and their families, adding that it is part of his culture as a soldier.

“It is also a practical demonstration of our determination to improve the quality of life of the officers and soldiers who continue to make enormous sacrifices in the defense of our nation.

“One of the cardinal pillars of my command philosophy is soldier culture, which recognizes that the strength of the Nigerian Army lies in the well-being, motivation and combat readiness of its personnel.

“Indeed, a soldier who receives adequate care, adequate housing and assurance of his family’s well-being is in a better position to remain focused, disciplined and committed to completing assigned missions,” he said.

Speaking further, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Nigerian Army has continued to expand in response to emerging security challenges across the country, stressing that expansion requires infrastructure, especially accommodation.

“For this reason, staff well-being continues to feature prominently in my leadership philosophy.

“The provision of decent housing remains one of the most important welfare requirements of our staff.

“In addition to serving as places of residence, these facilities provide a conducive environment for our officers, soldiers and their families to live with dignity and comfort. While recognizing that there is still much work to be done,” he said.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj. Gen. John Lar, commended the COAS for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of personnel through the development of critical infrastructure in the barracks, formations, establishments and cantonments of the Nigerian Army.
