EFCC charges ‘car dealer over alleged N15.4 million fraud in Enugu

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged one Chukwuebuka Anacletus Ogbonna before Justice Vincent C. Ezeugwu of the Enugu State High Court, sitting at Independence Layout, Enugu on four counts bordering on theft by conversion worth N15 million.

Count one of the charges reads: “Chukwuebuka Anacletus Ogbonna (trading under the name and style of Monpere’s Autos) sometime in the month of September 2023, at Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Enugu State High Court, committed the crime of: stealing by fraudulently converting to your personal use the sum of N4, 000, 000. 00 (Four Million Naira) for the purchase of a vehicle belonging to Mr. Paulson Nwakoby and thereby committing an offence.”

Count two of the indictment reads: “Chukwuebuka Anacletus Ogbonna (trading under the name and style of Monpere’s Autos) between November 28, 2023 and December 10, 2023, at Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Enugu State High Court, committed a serious crime: stealing by fraudulently exchanging the sum of N4 for your personal use, 000, 000. 00 (Four Million Naira) for the purchase of a vehicle belonging to Mr Paulson Nwakoby and thereby committed an offence.”

The offense is contrary to Article 342 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Enugu State and punishable under Article 353 (1) of the same Act.

The defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were read to him. In light of his plea, EFCC counsel, EFCC Assistant Commander, ACE II Rotimi Ajobiewe prayed the court for a trial date and for the accused to be returned to the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS in Enugu.

The trial was then postponed until July 16 2026 for a hearing on the bail application and the defendant was returned to the Commission facility.

The accused was arrested, following claims by the applicant that he paid him N15.4 million, sometime in October 2023, to help him import three cars.

After receiving the money, the defendant promised to hand over the car on or before December 25 2023, but did not fulfill it. He did not hand over the car or return the money to the applicant.
